In my desire to read works I'd already heard about, I remembered this one, yet another of those big names that you build up high expectations for... and in this case, I ended up disappointed. The story starts out seeming like it will take a humorous turn typical of 80s manga, then it's unclear if it will be serious, at times it feels like a big experiment by the author. There are many loose ends and little explanation, but perhaps I would have ignored many of the problems if I hadn't heard so much and so good things about this work, so feel free to judge it by yourself.
Now, regarding what this space is all about, fanservice, is perhaps the worst part. The girls may be somewhat cute, but the sex appeal is nonexistent. None of them have their moment of glory, nothing. Botan is one of the most wasted potential characters I've ever seen. The only so-called fanservice moment is with that nurse, but it's short-lived and seems to have been included because the sheer number of pretty boys was becoming unsustainable, which is another point to raise. Even Enma Jr. transforms into a pretty yaoi face boy at a certain point in the story. Male characters are shirtless and undergo transformations worthy of a shoujo romance manga for teenage girls. Even the geometric shapes of the tournament arena's structure are clearly penises, not to mention Kuwabara's obviously "funny" black-box censored penis or even the fully representation of one of the demons Yosuke faces. When a manga starts to descend into this kind of slang, considering it's published in a magazine for boys and focused in martial arts, it's indefensible.
The rating is fair for all of this. Enjoy the little I've managed to gather, and feel free to download the scanlated version I've prepared and made available.
